I am a camera nut! I have been collecting antique and vintage cameras for years, and get no greater pleasure than producing some great prints from a camera that is older than my long gone grandfather!
Digital cameras are handy and hold a lot of pictures. I find them very useful and like the fact that I can snap a thousand pictures on my new point-and-shoot without really caring whether it's going to be a great picture or not. But there's something special about putting a fresh, new roll of film into a camera and going out to take some well thought out and carefully arranged picture. (Of course, these days, I get my film pictures put on CD as well as printed, so I can show them off to my friends on the WWW!)
I think I've taken thousands of pictures on box cameras (620, 120, 127, etc.) and many thousands more on a manual 35mm SLR. My wife and I bought our first brand new Minolta SRT200 in 1978. What a great, great, solid camera! It's been dropped and banged around for years on camping trips, hikes, vacations, boat trips, and what have you, and still works just great with the original lens and flash with only a few small dings on the body and outer ring on the lens. It still LOOKS great, except for the small dings.
Another favorite of mine is my Retina IIIc Rangefinder. It takes a little more time to use than an SLR, but takes great pictures, and I really like the wide angle lens for landscapes. You can say what you want about Kodak, but they've put out some really great cameras over the years. That Retina is from the 50's and still works and looks just as well as the day it first came off the line.
eBay has been a tremendous amount of fun for me. Not only is it a great place to sell cameras (naturally, I sell cameras - I love 'em!), but it's also a great place for me to buy a camera that catches my eye so I can hold it in my hands, snap some pictures with it, and then display it or pass it on to another happy owner at a later date.
Every camera I sell here has been personally tested by me. I don't measure shutter speeds with a fancy meter or anything like that, but I've taken a lot of pictures with a lot of cameras and have a pretty good ear for what's working well and what's not. Furthermore, when I get a vintage camera (or even a brand new one) into my hands, I expect to have a learning experience with it as I come to understand all the nuances of that particular camera. Every one of them is different, no matter what anyone may say, and light is a funny thing. What works for one camera on one setting will not necessarily work the same on the next. That's a big part of the fun of photography!
