This is an absolutely beautiful picture book with brown and white and bright watercolor illustrations/artistic depictions of bears in their natural habitat.
This would make a wonderful original gift or be a fabulous teacher's resource or for homeschool.
My children learned more about bears from reading this book than they did from studying them at school! This is a memorable book that takes you right into a bear's life from hibernation, birth, learning as a cub, frustrations, dangers, joys, growing up and leaving to be a lone bear.
Bru is a fabled gentle vegetarian (well...he tried ants once) bear that eats berries and lives high upon the mountains tops in Lapland.
Inga Borg is well known for her beautifully illustrated award-winning book (Elsa Beskow-Plaketten (1970) of the same calibre of artistry titled Parrak-the White Reindeer. Bru the Brown Bear was a newly recommended book by the University of Chicago's Children's Book Center in September 1961.
Exerpt:
During the summer Mother Bear would take her family out walking. One day she did not bother to eat the fresh green grass which was growing all around them, for she had found something that bears like much better - an ant-hill. She thumped the mound with her broad paw, waited a moment, and then lapped up the ants and eggs which came tumbling out. Bru tasted them, too. Mmm...sweet and good! But little Brownie (Bru's cub sister) was afraid to have her turn.
