Zodiac Hurricane 733

- 24' Custom Cabin RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) -

You are bidding on a unique, one of a kind custom Zodiac Hurricane 733 rigid inflatable boat with custom aluminum cabin and cockpit solar canopy.  It utilizes the proven ZHT military spec hull and incorporates features for all weather protection and extended cruising.  In 1994, it became the smallest power boat to circle the world.  Since that time it has been exhibited at boat shows and events with very little time in the water.  The in-water photograph shows it at the completion of that voyage to see how it can look completely fitted out.  The remaining pictures show the condition as of last summer with engine and obsolete equipment removed.  The following paragraphs detail the primary features and condition of sale.

Hull - The deep V fiberglass hull is the standard military spec design that Zodiac utilizes for Special Operations and rescue organizations around the world.  The hull has never been painted and has no known structural defects or problems other than a couple of minor dings.

Inflatable Tubes - The tubes are made of neoprene/hypalon and have painted lettering.  They have custom attachment flaps to the cabin and a previously existing cockpit enclosure, and a custom stainless bow roller for the anchor rode.  The tubes leak overnight and would need troubleshooting - they show their age and use but could be made functional.

Cabin - the cabin and cockpit canopy frame are aluminum.  The entire cabin is flange bolted to stainless inserts in the deck, with the sides contoured to receive the tubes (the aluminum sides do not rest on the tubes).  The windscreen is welded to the cabin - the cockpit canopy is bolted to the top of the windscreen and stabilized with supports to the deck - the aft horizontal supports connecting to the self-righting gantry allow for flexion and movement.  The cockpit canopy incorporates four 43 watt solar panels.  The design objective was to provide a secure environment for extreme weather and dry storage, and also the ability to easily unbolt and remove the entire cabin if desired for any reason, and to provide access to fuel tanks below the cabin/deck.  Previously installed single-purpose lockers and storage systems have been removed.  Two openings in the deck can be seen inside the cabin - they permit access to thru-hull fittings that were used for a watermaker and head.

Self-Righting System - The aluminum arch above the transom is a Self-Righting System.  If the boat capsizes the contents of the orange compressed air cylinder can be released to inflate a 10' hypalon air bag which sits (collapsed) in the cradle on top of the gantry.  It has never been activated so the system will need a recharge and servicing.

Propulsion - The boat has a MerCruiser Bravo II drive that turns easily by hand and has no known mechanical problems.  This was a replacement that has about 400 hours on it. The original engine was a MerCruiser D636 but it has been sold - the boat does not come with an engine but the engine mount is in place.

Fuel Tanks and System - There are three below-deck custom aluminum fuel tanks with a combined capacity of approximately 280 gallons.  The tanks occupy all the space forward of the engine compartment below deck and can be inspected and serviced thru access plates.  The fuel system is designed for diesel or biodiesel - each tank has a supply and return line which terminate at separate manifolds.  All fuel lines are Parker Hannifin custom flexible stainless steel with Teflon interior and the twin manifolds allow switching and fuel transfer between tanks.  There are no known leaks or problems with any of the tanks, but they will need cleaning.  All of the tanks are bolted in place so one or more could be removed if desired.

Systems and Equipment - The photos show trim systems and miscellaneous systems and parts mounted in the engine compartment and elsewhere - these will be sold with the boat but the buyer should assume they will all need troubleshooting or replacement.

Trailer - A twin axle, full roller trailer with surge brakes is included with the sale.

Commercial Use - Law requires that any boat used to carry cargo or passengers for commercial purposes between US ports must have been built in America.  This boat was built by Zodiac primarily in Canada.  However, I obtained an official exemption to this law because so much custom work was done in the USA, so the boat can be used for commercial purposes if desired.

Note - Potential for Using the Cabin on another Hull - The cabin, cockpit canopy and self-righting gantry could easily be removed and adapted for another hull if desired.  The cabin sides are formed to mold around the tubes but could be modified to fit almost any deck shape.  I had considered moving these to a 30' RIB and found the process would have worked well.  I have pictures of the cabin during fabrication which could be forwarded if desired.

Conditions of Sale - The boat and trailer are offered as is, where is - what you see is what you will get.  I'm not aware of any significant problems but must sell as-is because I haven't had it surveyed or in the water recently.  The boat is located in Fairfield, Iowa 52556 and is available for inspection and/or survey.  The boat is being offered thru other venues and could be removed from eBay at any time.  The sale will be final so please ask any questions and inspect the boat prior to sale.

Removal and Shipping - The boat must be removed within 20 days - all shipping arrangements and related cost are the responsibility of the buyer.  However, if arrangements are agreed upon prior to auction close, I could deliver the boat on it's trailer for $.60 per round trip mile within North America.

Questions and answers about this item

Q: You state you have received exemption for the boat being made in Canada. Has it been documented in the US? What form of exemption do you have?
A: The exemption process involved submitting a detailed application for review by the (then) US Treasury Department of Customs Service - they granted the exemption in a letter dated May 18th, 1999, which determined "..that... Continue reading
