Audubon Limited Edition Lithograph
“Birds of America” Collection
By: M. Bernard Loates
This lithograph was 1 of 29 unique Audubon Images Master Lithographer Bernard Loates Produced during 1987 & 1988. In producing this collection, Bernard went to great lengths to achieve a lithograph that matched the originals in color.
This process began using original art and engravings of Audubon/Havell images. Loates and his team then stripped the coloring resulting in the bare engraving. Skins and plumage of the actual bird were obtained to create custom Inks that were as accurate to the original colors as possible. The inks were laid down using special techniques with 400 line screen variations to create a one of a kind image. The screens were so fine that even under magnification the print maintained a continuous tone. The prints were then produced on very high quality, heavy weight paper. They were printed using a Harris Offset Press. Each Lithograph was passed through 32-60 times to achieve the perfect image. Once Loates completed printing the lithographs, he destroyed all original plates, etc. , to ensure that his collection could not be duplicated.
Many experts believe that these lithographs are far superior to any other Audubon re-creations.
“...there is a continuing irony to the story of M. Bernard Loates. Perhaps his greatest acclaim will not come from his work as a fine artist; nor, for that matter from his expertise in the production of graphics. It will arise from his recreation of John James Audubon’s “ Birds of America” an endeavour requiring every talent at his Command"
