Long before Bob Newhart became a TV star, he was America's best-selling comedian on record. It started in the '50s when he was an accountant in Chicago. Bored silly, Newhart made tapes of imaginary phone conversations with various oddball characters. A local DJ introduced the tapes to an exec at Warner Bros. Records-and the rest, as they say, is history: Newhart became a star almost overnight. In 1960, The Button-Down Mind Of Bob Newhart album sold 750,000 copies in the U.S., and was the first comedy album to hit #1 on the charts. With the release of his follow-up, The Button-Down Mind Strikes Back!, Newhart captured the record for longest simultaneous #1 and #2 albums on the chart (The mark stood for more than three decades until Guns 'N Roses came along.)
